3 Unique Sauces To Put On Your Next Pizza Pie

Virginia Caballero

Pizza has become one of America's most beloved foods throughout the years. Because of its easy preparation, ample portions, and potential for customization, pizza serves as a great menu item for parties and gatherings any time of the year. If you are tired of the traditional marinara-style sauce that comes on most traditional pizzas, it's time to expand your culinary horizons and incorporate some new sauces into your pizza preparations.

Here are three unique sauces to consider using the next time you make pizza.

1. Pumpkin Puree

Pumpkin is a flavor that many people associate with fall, but can easily be incorporated into your pizza to create a sophisticated and healthy dish. Pumpkin puree contains about 10% of your daily potassium requirement, and can be beneficial in helping you maintain a strong immune system by providing about 3.4 grams of iron per cup.

You can slather some pumpkin puree atop your pizza crust alone, or mix it in with your traditional tomato-based sauce to help cut the acidity of the tomatoes. Pumpkin pairs great with goat cheese and caramelized onions, making a pizza that you and your guests will be raving about well into the future.

2. Pesto

If you are looking for a fresh, herb-based sauce to add to your pizza, then pesto is your best bet. You can easily whip up a batch of your own pesto at home by combining olive oil, basil, garlic, and some parmesan cheese to taste in a food processor until smooth. You can also add some pine nuts if you want a richer flavor.

Pesto pairs well with many different vegetables, but sliced tomatoes and some mozzarella cheese are sure to bring out the natural flavors in your homemade pizza. In addition to being delicious, a pizza topped with pesto can increase your intake of flavonoid phytochemicals called orientin and vicenin. These antioxidants help to keep your healthy by ridding your body of free radicals.

3. Balsamic Glaze

Another simple and unique pizza sauce that can be created at home is a balsamic glaze. All you need to do to prepare this sauce is add a bottle of balsamic vinegar to a non-stick frying pan.

Set your range to medium-high, and bring the vinegar to a boil. Once your balsamic is boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and allow your liquid to simmer until it reaches a syrupy consistency. Reducing the vinegar in this way helps to sweeten the sauce, making a glaze that pairs perfectly with sausage and mozzarella on your pizza pie.

Finding unique sauces to use on your pizzas is an excellent way to breathe new life into this party staple. Contact a restaurant like Pizza Wali for more ideas.
